We’ve just been told that 59 per cent of the British public (according to an AOL poll of 26,000 people) believe that the late Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah will beat Alexandra Burke to number one. But, based on current sales figures, they’re wrong-diggedy-wrong. The latest midweek figures have just come in – and now that Alexandra’s single is available on CD as well as digitally, it’s sailing ahead even more than it was before. It’s sold just under 290,000 copies so far – while Jeff Buckley’s version currently sits at number three with just over 45,000 sales. He could end up knocking Leona off number two though – she’s only 1,000 or so ahead. The power of The X Factor is truly staggering – and there’s more evidence of that a little further down in the chart. Beyonce has two tracks in the top ten – her current single If I Were A Boy (at number four in the midweeks) and her Dreamgirls song Listen – yes, the very same song she performed with Alexandra at The X Factor final, which is currently at number six. Amazing. The final Christmas countdown will be announced on Sunday night – but all those Jeff Buckley fans need to put their money where their mouth is if they really want him to keep Alexandra off number one.
